Montgomery water

nothing’s been solved,” Berger said.
Allard said that she’s concerned about
the wear and tear on her appliances, such
as her clothes washer, but said that’s secondary to her first concern: the health
of her family. She held up a plastic food
container holding water. Clumps of black
goo sloshed around in the water as Allard
held it up.
“We’re brushing our teeth with bottled water now,” Allard said. “I feel like
my whole house is disgusting.”
Nelson and Mapstone explained that
the testing could begin within a couple of weeks after the DOH approves it.
Mapstone said the village will find out
how well the pilot test is working after
about two weeks.
Berger suggested that the village
implement new wells that could be clean,
rather than spend “a fortune” trying
to discover the problem. Brescia said
that would be too expensive, and Nelson
added that there’s no guarantee those
wells would be any better.
Mapstone said there are many ways to
solve the village’s problem, but that there
needs to be a balance between what is
possible and what is practical and cost-ef-
ficient. In response to the suggested use
of a reverse-osmosis system, Mapstone
said, “Yes, that could work, but it could
also bankrupt you.” He said the village
may even find out after the pilot test
that what Optimus is proposing would
be cost-prohibitive, but he added that the
company believes the material chosen for
the system will be effective and relatively
affordable.
“How long before we see a difference?” Allard asked.
“You won’t,” Mapstone answered,
explaining that the engineering firm will
be testing only a sample of the village
water, not the entire village’s capacity.
In the meantime, then, the village
should supply bottled water to its residents, Allard suggested. Brescia asked
that residents give him another month
before the Village Board considers that.
In other news, Marc Devitt was honored by DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance
Education) Officer Jack Smith for providing a life-size costume of Daren, the
DARE mascot, to local DARE program.
To explain Devitt’s impact, Smith quoted Winston Churchill: “We make a living
by what we get, but we make a life by
what we give.”
