At the Village Board meeting on Tuesday night, Optimus Engineering representative Greg Mapstone proposed a pilot test of a treatment system that would be similar to the “green sand” system used in the Town of Wallkill. The test would treat water that comes directly from a village well, before the water would normally be treated with chlorine, Mapstone said. The cost of the test, and the final system if approved, wasn’t publicized at Tuesday’s meeting. Department of Public Works Superintendent Buddy Nelson explained that the proposal needs to be reviewed and approved by the county Department of Health (DOH) before the test can be done. Community members methodically voiced their problems to the board Tuesday night concerning the rented property at 14 Riverview St. The testimonies not only revealed similar issues among the surrounding homeowners, but from the village as well, which has a long list of violations to be addressed by the landlord and tenants. The home of concern sits close to the corner of Rifton Place and Riverview Street; while most of the nearby houses are well-kept and orderly, 14 Riverview St. is anything but. The front yard is littered with children’s toys and trash, and the backyard harbors multiple unused vehicles and more garbage. Neighbors of the residence echoed similar problems: the sight, the smell, frequent profanity, and an unwillingness to change. The village has even more concerns. More than 15 violations are currently under review by the board and the village building inspector, Dean Stickles.
