On Sunday, October 4, Sunday school children in Wallkill brought their pets to Sunday school
for a special blessing of the animals. Many dogs, cats, guinea pigs and stuffed animals were
blessed by Pastor Toni on the lawn of the Wallkill Reformed Church.
No cause for alarm at Maybrook
sewer treatment plant

“It’s working. There’s no problem
with the sewer treatment plant,” said
Maybrook Village Trustee Kevin Greany.
According to Mayor Dennis Leahy,
a few residents had lodged complaints
about odors wafting out of the treatment
plant and through the village, so they
immediately reached out to the contractor
operating the facility. Don VonLeuvan,
the sewer operator, appeared before the
board at their meeting last week.
VonLeuvan explained that the village
had been under heavy continuous rain
that had cleaned the sewer out and resulted in higher than average sludge. He took
the normal measures to decrease the odor
and remove the material, but the issue
was really that the plant needed a second
Dumpster to get the additional sludge
taken away.
“I can’t get rid of the sludge,” said
VonLeuvan, adding that he was making a
call to the service provider to ask for an
additional Dumpster.
The board anticipated the dumpster
being provided shortly and noted that
once the additional material is hauled
away, the smell will go with it.
The Village Board voted at the same
meeting to accept the bid of Stamex at
$37,900 to reline approximately 570 linear
feet of gravity sanitary sewer mains in the
village.
They also planned to sign a contract
for the removal of asbestos at 401 Tower
Ave., which is the next step toward having
the structure demolished.
“It’s nice that we’re seeing the end of
the tunnel here,” said Mayor Leahy.
The demolition of the building will
take place within 30 days of the removal
of the asbestos.
Various streets in the village will be
paved during the next few days, including
Houston Street, Wiley Street, Univoice
Street, Spring Street from Tower Avenue
to the dead end, Jewell Street and Prince
Street. Residents will be notified
