Montgomery considers solar array
The Village of Montgomery is considering installing
solar panels on land near the Bachelor Street extension
wastewater treatment plant.
The solar array would offset the cost of the electricity
needed to run the wastewater treatment plant.
“So, it would help us reduce the bills each month,”
Village of Montgomery Mayor Stephen Brescia said.
The board of trustees is considering a proposal from
GE Solar for a small array on a parcel of land set aside
for this exact use. The village would lease the land to the
solar company, Brescia said.
While the village is still unsure how many panels
would be installed, the installation would take up no
more than the three to four-acre parcel.
Montgomery to get new traffic light
The New York State Department of Transportation
(NYSDOT) has decided to install a traffic light in the
village of Montgomery at the intersection of Albany
Post Road and Route 17K as a result of a traffic study
requested by the Montgomery Board of Trustees and
Town of Montgomery.
Village of Montgomery Mayor Stephen Brescia said
that intersection can sometimes be congested.
“A traffic light would be a benefit,” Brescia said.
The village is unsure when the traffic light will be
installed and NYSDOT will pay for it.
Cancer Resource Center
provides holiday assistance
The Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center in
Montgomery is making the holidays brighter for families
with cancer through a holiday gift program.
The center is collecting gift cards—including gas
cards, grocery store cards, Walmart gift cards and Target
gift cards—for families struggling with cancer through
the holidays.
Founder, President and CEO of the Hudson Valley
Cancer Resource Center Casey MacDonald said the
holidays can be difficult for families who struggle with
medical bills and transportation costs related to cancer
treatments. A gas and grocery gift card frees up money
in a family’s budget that could be used for other things,
especially as expenses pile up at the holidays.
The cards are donated to families that the center
already serves or families that call and ask for assistance.
MacDonald said the program donates gift cards to
approximately 65 families or individuals, ranging from
single mothers with kids to elderly couples.
The center also operates Christmas Without Cancer,
a holiday gift program for families struggling with
cancer. Volunteers may adopt a family or donate money
to the gift program. The deadline for volunteers to
adopt families and for families with cancer to ask for
assistance is Dec. 1.
The Hudson Valley Cancer Research Center assists
patients and their families who are struggling with
cancer by solving quality of life issues that affect patients
and their families. The center serves between 350 and 500
patients a year in nine counties throughout the Hudson
Valley.
Those interested may send donations or drop them
off in person at 100 Ward Street, Montgomery. Those
P olice B lotter
that donate checks should write ‘holiday program”
in the memo line. To learn more, email info@

Solex-Catsmo expansion
receives planning board approval
The Solex-Catsmo smokehouse in Shawangunk has
received planning board approval for a 10,250-square-
foot expansion, which will expand the smokehouse’s
operations.
The addition, which connects two buildings and
a concrete slab, will allow for the expansion of the
business’ current operation—processing, smoking and
storing fish. Principal Engineer for MNTM Lawrence
Marshall said the expansion will provide more storage
and space for the employees to work.
Solex Fine Foods Founder Markus Draxler said the
company hopes to start building as soon as possible.
Draxler said he hopes the expansion will allow the
company to expand their retail operation to reach
markets nationwide, past the primarily east coast market
the company currently caters to.
“The expansion is going to help us go to the next
level,” Draxler said.
The expansion will also give the company the chance
to upgrade machinery, Draxler said.
Marshall said the expansion won’t result in a
significant increase in traffic or employees.
The intersection of Bruyn Turnpike and Myers Road
will also be widened to allow large tractor-trailers to
better navigate the intersection.
