Montgomery candidates open up at forum
By RACHEL COLEMAN
The Walden Community Council hosted a special
“Meet the Candidates Night” last week, affording town of
Montgomery voters a unique opportunity to hear where
the candidates stand on the issues.
The one thing on which every candidate agreed was
Miller stays on
Ulster ballot
that they would be voting against the ballot measure to
hold a New York State Constitutional Convention.
Democratic candidate F. Bryan Paz and Republican
Rodney Winchell are facing off for the town supervisor
seat.
Paz was born and raised in Maybrook, graduating
from Valley Central High School in 1977. He worked for
Yellow Freight in Maybrook for almost 17 years, loading
and unloading trailers.
“I know what it’s like to do hard work. I know what
it’s like to do hard labor. I know what it’s like to be from
paycheck to paycheck,” said Paz.

A decision has finally been made
regarding the District 16 race for Ulster
County Legislature.
In a press release from Ulster County
GOP Chairman Roger Rascoe, it was
revealed that Ulster County Judge
Christopher Cahill decided to leave
Kathy Miller’s (GOP, C, IDP) name on the
ballot in the District 16 legislative race
alongside Tracey Bartels (D, WFP).
But that leaves one question
unanswered: What will happen if Miller
wins?
“If by chance [Miller] wins the
election, she will not take office,” says
Rascoe. “It is my belief that in that
scenario, the County will declare the
office vacant and in accordance with the
County Charter, the County Legislature
can make an appointment. We felt that
we could not win a write-in campaign.”
Miller previously tried to drop out of
the race on September 28 after the Hatch
Act was invoked, which bars federal
employees from running for office.
Ashley Dittus, Ulster County Elections
Commissioner for the Democratic Party,
said she rejected Miller’s declination

A petition has been filed for the
annexation of approximately 34 acres
from the town of Montgomery into the
village of Maybrook, as part of a major
corporate park project.
The property—known as the former
rail yard—is owned by Galaxy Limited
and is located between the railroad and
Stewart State Forest. Galaxy is proposing
multiple manufacturing lots with rail
access, a new road connecting through to
Henry Henning Drive, and a bike/walking
trail.
Ross Winglovitz, the project’s engineer
from Engineering Properties, told the
Maybrook Village Board last week that
they have modified their conceptual plan
from this spring. They had to pull the
buildings back slightly after the survey
and wetland delineation revealed that the
“wetlands encroach more than expected.”
According to Winglovitz, 99 percent
of the project is already located in the
village. All of the services, such as water
