New York resident fatally shot
by State Trooper
A male New York resident was fatally shot by a State
Trooper on May 23 after attempting to enter the officer’s
vehicle.
On May 23, at approximately 1:55 a.m., State Police
responded to a report of a disabled vehicle blocking
both lanes of travel on I-84 in the Town of Montgomery
near exit 5A, according to a press release from Pierce
Gallagher, New York State Police Major and Troop F
Commander. As troopers arrived on the scene of the
disabled vehicle, another call was received of a man
walking on the westbound shoulder of I-84, near exit 5.
The responding troopers left the disabled vehicle to
respond to the call of the man walking on I-84. Troopers
found the man, Luke Patterson, 41, of Tannersville,
NY. One trooper left the car to engage Patterson in
conversation, while the other drove the vehicle beside
them.
A preliminary investigation by state police found
Patterson was not cooperative with the troopers and
refused to comply with commands multiple times. When
Patterson made a move to enter the car, one trooper fired
his division-issued firearm, wounding Patterson.
The troopers immediately called for assistance and
treated Patterson at the scene. Patterson was transported
to Orange Regional Medical Center, where he died.
The state police are conducting an administrative
investigation into the shooting and a criminal
investigation with the Orange County District Attorney’s
Office.
Troopers responding to the disabled vehicle were
assisted by a commercial motor vehicle from the roadway.
State police would like to speak with this driver, and
anyone else who may have been traveling on I-84 who
may have witnessed any portion of the incident. State
police can be contacted at 845-344-5300.
Driver injured in Town of
Montgomery accident
An auto accident in the Town of Montgomery on May
27 resulted in one man hospitalized in critical condition.
The Town of Montgomery Police responded to the
scene of an auto accident involving a motorcycle and a
vehicle on May 27 at 12:24 p.m., according to investigator
Stephen Ragni.
The vehicle, a 2006 Chrysler operated by a 53-year-old
female, was traveling southbound on NYS Route 416 and
P olice B lotter
attempting to make a left turn onto Neelytown Road. The
motorcycle, a 2015 Harley Davidson operated by a 29-year-
old male, was traveling northbound on 416.
As the female operator made the left turn onto
Neelytown Road, the motorcycle collided with the vehicle,
and the motorcycle operator was thrown.
The male operator was flown to Westchester Medical
Center by Life Net in very critical condition. The female
operator refused medical attention.
The Town of Montgomery Police are conducting an
investigation with the assistance of the New York State
Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Montgomery to host public
meeting with Medline
The Village of Montgomery Board of Trustees will
hold a public meeting with Medline representatives on
June 4.
Medline representatives will be present to answer
questions from the public concerning the proposed
project in the Town of Montgomery.
Medline Industries, Inc. has proposed a 1.3 million-
square-foot building just outside Village of Montgomery
limits, on the east side of NYS Route 416 and north of
Interstate I-84.
The building will contain offices, shipping and
receiving, warehouse storages and areas for employees.
The building will replace the outgrown facility in
Wawayanda, which employs 320 workers, according to
Town of Montgomery planning board documents.
The meeting will be on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Village
of Montgomery Senior Center, 36 Bridge Street.
VC budget approved
A year removed from a budget season that saw Valley
Central taxpayers reject the district’s first proposed
budget, residents were far more receptive to the 2019-
2020 proposed spending plan, as it passed with a 1,296 to
665 margin in Tuesday’s balloting. Voters gave the green
light on May 21 to the $106,822,000 budget, which includes
a 1.05 percent tax levy increase, which is within the state
tax cap limit. The budget passed with the support of 66
percent of district voters.
In a separate ballot proposition, voters also approved
the establishment of a Capital Reserve Fund for the
district by a vote of 1,320 to 608. Valley Central can save
$10 million in the fund over a 10-year period, and each
expenditure for the funding of a capital project will have
to be approved by voters in the future.
In the district’s hotly contested Board of Education
races, Acting Board of Education President Sarah
Messing (1191 votes), Arthur Fitzgerald (1097 votes) and
Diana Revoir (936 votes) claimed the three seats that were
on the line in Tuesday’s election. Messing, Fitzgerald
and Revoir all won three-year terms on the council, and
because Messing received the most votes, she will also
fill the unexpired term from May 22 through June 30 that
was created when former Trustee Joseph Byrne resigned
earlier this year. Challengers Katie McKnight, Patrick
Murphy and Deborah Hansen all fell short in their
attempts to secure board seats.
