Shawangunk sets fee
for capturing loose dogs
By TED REMSNYDER
Corralling canines is a difficult and
time-consuming task. And under
the Town of Shawangunk’s previous
system, when Dog Control Officer Paolo
Chiappetta returned a loose dog back to its
rightful owner, the department would get
no compensation for that labor-intensive
transaction. At the Town Board’s May 18
meeting, the council voted to rectify that
situation, as the board set a new $50 fee
for residents whose dogs are returned by
the officer.
The new fee will help fund the agency,
which also collects a $130 payment each
time Chiappetta has to bring a dog to the
county humane society. Previously, all
residents had to foot the bill when a dog
went missing and the officer had to spend
time (and transportation costs) bringing
the animal back home. “It shouldn’t be
that way,” Shawangunk Supervisor John
Valk said. “They should recoup the costs
so the ordinary taxpayer isn’t paying for
somebody else not taking care of their
dog.”
Last fall, the Wallkill Youth Football
League unveiled a new snack stand at
Galeville Park that the organization had
donated to the town, and the pigskin league
now has further plans to complement the
public space by installing a scoreboard at
the field. The group collected donations
from the community to fund the 7 x
20-foot solar-powered scoreboard, which
will be installed at the corner of the park
towards Long Lane. “The solar is nice
because they won’t dig up the fields or
anything,” Valk said.
The scoreboard will also be donated
to the town, and the structure has been
designed not to disturb homeowners
who reside near the park. The back
of the scoreboard is painted black to
blend in, no sound will emit from the
scoreboard and the lights on the unit will
face the field. While modest in scale, the
scoreboard should provide a thrill for
the kids who step on the field each fall
for the weekly football games. During the
Thursday night meeting, the board also
approved a plan to establish the Leonette
Subdivision Drainage District, which will
be funded exclusively by the residents of
the development.
