Annual cupcake festival still a hit in Gardiner

By GARY M . AYD

The seventh annual cupcake festival was held at Wright ’ s Farm in Gardner Saturday . It marked the fourth consecutive year the event has been held at the 100 plus year-old family-run farm after outgrowing its original location on Main Street in Gardner .

The festival featured 16 cupcake , nine food , 24 craft , six wine , one spirit and one hard cider vendor for a total of 57 businesses .
Approximately 10,000-12,000 people attended the party , bringing their vehicles up and down the unpaved , narrow winding dirt road of Wrights . Admission was $ 5 and most of the sweets were in the $ 2- $ 4 price range .
Among the nearly 60 vendors was traveling trailer called “ Whipped Cupcakes ” run by the mother and daughter team Nicole and Aliya Conklin of Newburgh .
“ I ’ ve always loved baking since I was a little girl ,” said Nicole , the mom . “ We started out just enjoying it , then it became a hobby , next it was a part time business and now we ’ re full-time .”
What made Whipped Cupcakes stand out so much was the vintage trailer they found at a salvage yard in New Mexico and rebuilt nearly from scratch .
But they ’ re not all show and no substance . The budding business also has some hardware , taking first place in the K104 Cupcake Wars last year for their
Nicole Conklin of Whipped Cupcakes at the Gardiner Cupcake Festival .
‘ Chubby Hubby ’ Cupcake . The awardwinning confection consists of caramel , chocolate and peanut butter all around a pretzel .
While it remains popular , the new best seller , according to Conklin , is their deepfried maple bacon cupcake .
Another vendor who jumped out was the GoodDog Biscuit Company of Duchess County .
Run by Maureen and Mark Frankl , this K-9 friendly-treat center was born out of family tragedy . After feeding their dog , Zoe , treats that were made in China the dog sadly became very sick and died .
Determined to not let that happen to another beloved pet , Maureen set out to make wholesome treats devoid of many harmful ingredients like corn .
“ The whole house is now dedicated to this business ,” Mark said . “ I work a fulltime job and Maureen does this full-time .”
The organization of this winning collection of confection was in fact a family affair . “ My sister mom and I did most the organizing for this ,” Mackenzie Dietz said . “ We did more advertising this year than in the past so the crowd was a bit bigger .”
