highway

Shawangunk board wants power to
appoint superintendents
By TED REMSNYDER
After a period of instability in recent
years in finding a long-term leader for
its Highway Department, the Town of
Shawangunk is readying legislation to
convert the Superintendent of Highways
position from an elected post to an
appointed job. At its board meeting on
Thursday evening, the Town Board set a
public hearing for its May 19th meeting for
debate on Local Law Number Two of 2016,
which will allow the board to handpick
the Superintendent of Highways going
forward. The voters will have their say
on the matter as well. If the local law is
passed by the board, a mandatory public
special election will be held to decide the
issue no earlier than 60 days after the
adoption of the local law.
Shawangunk Town Supervisor John
Valk indicated that the board could vote
on the local law at the next meeting
after the public hearing is completed. “I
think we will, unless somebody brings
up something that we need to research,”
he said of the impending vote. If the law
is passed, the Superintendent will serve
at the pleasure of the board and may be

Corporal John Ciardullo, a combat
infantry veteran of the Korean War,
was honored Saturday in front of a
packed house at the Bradley Assembly
Room in Walden Village Hall.
The retired veteran was presented
four medals by Congressman Sean
Patrick Maloney, and was verbally
honored by
many other
political
and family
members in
attendance,
including
senator
and fellow
veteran Bill
Larkin and
son Mike.

Ciardullo was born in Brooklyn on
February 21, 1933. He is the second
oldest of four brothers.
John became a soldier in the United
States Army on July 8, 1952 and served
his country in the Korean War until
April 30, 1954. While serving in Korea
as a Combat Infantryman, John fought
in the Third Korean Winter and the

Farace. They raised 5 children together,
Michael, Catherine, Douglas, Richard
and John Peter. They are the proud
grandparents of 15 children and greatgrandparents of 6 children.
In his younger days, John enjoyed
painting pictures, dancing, bowling and
softball. John enjoyed being involved in
youth programs and was always ready
to volunteer his time. He served as
President of the Walden Little League,
