Peg Tremper remembered in Shawangunk

Shawangunk mourned the passing of former town clerk Margaret “ Peg ” Tremper at the last town board meeting .
Tremper retired from her post at the end of 2013 after 38 years of service , including 19 consecutive terms as town clerk .
At their regular meeting on Thursday , the Shawangunk Town Board issued a proclamation honoring her memory and held a moment of silence .
“ The passing of Margaret “ Peg ” Tremper has caused a deep void of sadness in our community ,” the proclamation stated in part . “ While at the same time bringing forth a sense of joy and pride

Coyne and Fourth Ward Councilman Eric Johnson emphasized that the program would attract addicts who choose to pursue treatment . Addicts getting treatment by court order are less likely to succeed , they indicated .
Depew advised Police Chief Robert Hertmann to instruct the 911 dispatchers to have police pick up addicts asking for help .
Meanwhile , the Washington Heights sidewalk project will begin in a few weeks , said Lou Ingrassia , Department of Public Works Superintendent .
In his acknowledgment of DePew , Ingrassia recalled DePew ’ s unexpected success in getting the Wallkill Winning Way tunnel built as well as other unique deals DePew made . Ingrassia remembered a visit from a representative from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation . He had come to town to speak , but during his visit he cited the town for a $ 75,000 environmental violation . Depew negotiated the fine down to $ 25,000 and was able to have it applied to a local natural resource protection project .
County Legislator Michael Paduch recalled working on issues with DePew beginning when DePew was 15 and participating in the Youth and Government program . Four years later , DePew was the youngest town council member in the state . Paduch cited DePew ’ s success with getting plate readers for

The proclamation also stated that Tremper “ inspired so many others to participate and be more involved in their community .”
Tremper ’ s passion and hard work was recognized over the years by many . She was honored as Town Clerk of the Year in New York State in 1996 and the day of her retirement celebration in 2013 was declared Margaret “ Peg ” Tremper Day in Ulster County . The new town hall building was also named in her honor .
Tremper passed away on Sunday , March 5 . She was 90 years old .

In other business , the board appointed Richard Barnhart to a 5-year-term on the Board of Assessment Review .
The board also renewed its contract with County Waste through the end of November . They also approved the hiring of Sterling Environmental to conduct the annual landfill post-closure testing and monitoring at a cost of $ 5,950 .
The lawn mowing bids were tabled until the board ’ s next meeting on April 6 .
The town board also held an executive session regarding police personnel , but did not make any decisions .

Several officials cited DePew for consistently transcending political partisanship in town board discussions .
“ We held healthy debates until 11 or 12 at night , but we set aside politics ,” said Valentin . “ There were three Republicans and two Democrats , but we weren ’ t voting with a party , just what we truly felt .”
