Trish Duffy was walking around Montgomery when her friend said the village could use an ice cream store. The comment sparked the idea to open an ice cream shop, and so began the two-year search for a building. The Duffy family, comprised of Trish, her husband, Mike, and their six children, Meghan, Michael, Brendan, Ryan, Caitlin and Allyson, opened the restaurant last Monday. Duffy’s was bustling during its grand opening. Retirees, children, young people and families sat at the counter or in the vinyl seats, munching on breakfast or lunch. Pop music played in the background. The blue walls, red trim, long counter, jukebox and vinyl seats give off a 50s vibe. Trish Duffy said the retro vibe harkens back to a simpler time, when families and couples would go out on ice cream outings or dates. “We wanted to go back to that time,” Trish said. “It’s a nice time period, it’s a time when things were more family- oriented.” The family envisions young couples on a late-night date coming for a bite to eat or ice cream after the movies, or children coming after school with their families for a treat. “When they come in, it’s not just a place to get ice cream,” Trish said. “Yeah, it’s a place to forget your From left: Caitlin, Trish, Meghan, and Allyson (lower center) Duffy outside Duffy’s, a new family-owned ice cream and burger joint in the Village of Montgomery. worries for an hour, spend time with family and friends,” Meghan said. The restaurant will feature homemade ice cream prepared by Meghan, who used to work in an ice cream stand. The glass counter gives customers the chance to see Meghan making the sweet treat, a unique experience from most ice cream stands and restaurants. “It’s pretty cool because it’s a nice experience for people walking in,” Trish said. “They actually get to see Meghan really out there, making the ice creams.” Several town and village residents expressed excitement at the grand opening, saying they are happy to have a new place to gather in the village. Montgomery resident and retiree Gary Humphrey said he used to meet up with friends and other retirees at the old Village Luncheonette before it closed and is excited to have a place to meet up with other residents again. “It’s like a meeting place for us,” Humphrey said. It will also feature homemade baked goods, Getrude Hawk Chocolates, fries, burgers, sandwiches and other American fare. The family is open to suggestions and wants to create an inclusive menu, with sugar-free and gluten-free options, and other alternatives to a traditional diet. Trish said she wants the restaurant to be involved in the community through fundraisers, sponsorships and events that support local charities and organizations. The tentative hours of the restaurant will be from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Check out the diner on Facebook at Duffy’s or call the store phone at 769-7608. The restaurant is located at 94 Clinton Street, Montgomery. However, the school district still needs to find two qualified foreign language teachers to hire, which can be a difficult task. The board agreed to pull approximately $790,000 from the district’s fund balance of $17.9 million to pay for seventh grade Spanish and other recommendations. Other recommendations include the addition of a school psychologist at the high school, four new art clubs at the elementary schools, a new English as a new language teacher, a new summer academy at the middle school level, a varsity girl’s golf team, a Big Brothers/ Big Sisters program and more. Final budget numbers can change, as the district is still waiting to hear the amount of state aid to be allocated and the cost of other mandates and changes. The final proposed budget will be presented at the April 9 board of education meeting. The budget vote will be on May 21.
