By JASPREET GILL

C. Victor Work, former Ulster County
Democratic Commissioner of Elections
and member of the Wallkill Volunteer
Ambulance Corps, passed away on
Thursday, March 8. He was 74 years old.
Work was a pillar of the Ulster County
community. He served as the Democratic
Commissioner of Elections from 2011 to
2017 before Ashley Dittus, his Deputy
Commissioner, succeeded him.
“Vic leaves behind a legacy in the
Democratic party, he was a grassroots
activist before that term was a widely
spread philosophy,” said Dittus. “...Vic
always treated people with respect and
dignity and he had a warm and generous
personality. I am deeply sorry that he is
gone and I will miss him.”
She and Work worked closely during
their time at the Board of Elections.
“I was honored when he nominated
me to replace him,” she said. “He loved
campaigns and Democratic politics for
over 30 years in Ulster County,” she says.
“Helping to get his wife Mary elected to
Family Court and later Surrogate Court
was how he first got involved. He would
go on to take on a pivotal campaign role in
Maurice Hinchey’s re-election campaigns
for Congress and played a big role in
the election of our first ever County
Executive, Mike Hein.”
Hein remembers Work as a close friend
who helped impact Ulster County’s future
generations.
“To understand who Vic Work was is to

expected,” said Hein. “He put on no airs.
He was simply an honorable high quality
individual who was smart and talented.
He valued people who delivered results,
people who were passionate and people
who were honorable. That’s why he has
helped shape Ulster County and helped
impact future generations who may never
know Vic Work. He’s a special human
being.”
Work founded the Ulster County
Democratic Committee Coordinated
Campaign and was a trustee and treasurer
of the Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance
Corps until his passing.
“Vic approached being an EMT [and]
driver like everything else he did with
‘it has to be done right’,” said Jason
Klock, President of the Wallkill Volunteer
Ambulance Corps. “He became very
involved with EMS at the county and
state level. Some of the benefits we enjoy
primarily due to Vic are the property tax
reduction being an active EMS member,
the 911 dispatch center, the Medicare
provider number...Vic is leaving a really
big void in the EMS community.”
Work was instrumental in the
legislation to pass “Robin’s Law,” a law to
get medical expenses covered for all first
responders in Ulster County. He worked
with Senator John Bonacic to pass the law
after workers comp refused to cover the
expenses of a fellow Wallkill Volunteer
Ambulance Corps member who had blood
borne exposure. After 18 months of many
lobbies, rallies and a workshop in Albany,
the law was passed.
“His two loves were EMS and politics,”
says Susan McCarl, a member of the
corps.
McCarl said Work leaves behind an

The program for the aged remains with
a $54,166 budget and the village library is
staying with a $25,000 budget.

Brescia confident village will stay within tax cap
“I’m confident we can get below the
cap,” says Village of Montgomery Mayor
Stephen Brescia. “It’s closer than what it
is normally this time of the year.”
Montgomery
village
officials
and residents were all in favor of the
tentative 2018-2019 village budget that was
presented during a March 6 budget work
session.
This fiscal year’s cap is two percent
and the current tentative budget is 1.90
percent more than last year’s budget.
Taxes can be raised by two percent this
year.
The tentative sum of all village funds
is $5,591,933. The village is allocating
$4,661,276 to their general fund, $386,382
to their water fund and $544,275 to their
sewer fund.
The proposed budget for the board
energy in Ulster County that cannot be
matched.
“He was involved in so many different
things,” she said. “He helped move EMS
forward in the region for Ulster County.
He was always trying to get people
involved in our agency or the ones where
they lived. And for politics, he really
worked with the democratic people all
over the county helping them as much as
he could and making sure the elections
ran as smooth as possible.”
Work aided in the establishment of
the Southern Ulster Training Center and
took a key role in establishing the first
mutual aid plan for daytime EMS calls
between Wallkill, Shawangunk, Gardiner
and Modena.
A memorial service will be held on
Wednesday, March 14 at 3 p.m. where
Hein will give a speech about Work and
his legacy. The funeral will be at the
Millspaugh Funeral Home in Walden,
located at 22 Bank St.
