3 Wallkill Valley Times, Wednesday, June 19, 2019 New Walker Valley fire truck christened in style truck that we’d normally have paid about $60,000 more for the same truck,” Greer said. “We were very lucky with this one both on delivery time and pricing.” Since there are no hydrants in Walker Valley’s service area, the 1000 gallon tank and pumping function of 63-40 is critical in the department’s ability to fight and control fires. For Greer, a 36-year veteran of the department Saturday’s wetdown represented his seventh. The day featured food, drink, the traditional water spraying by various firefighters, and of course the display of the new truck which saw its first action on May 9 during a Longville fire. At its peak more than 150 people were in attendance despite overcast skies. A total of 8 companies were in attendance at one point or another to celebrate the new truck of Walker Valley. Companies that made appearances included: Circleville, Cragsmoor, Bloomingburg, Pine Bush, Bullville, Montgomery, Wallkill and Plattekill. By GARY M. AYD Walker Valley Fire Department welcomed a new member to its family in traditional Wetdown fashion Saturday. Truck #63-40 was officially introduced as the latest vehicle in the departments fleet. The new truck takes the place of #63-20 which has been repurposed to the Bliss Idaho Fire company. 63-40 was initially commissioned from a manufacturer in Wisconsin in late October. “We got really lucky with this truck and how fast we got it,” James “Jim” Greer, Walker Valley Fire Chief said. “The normal turnaround time on these types of trucks is 6-months to a year and we got this one in February, just 4-months after ordering it.” Truck 63-40 features a 1000 gallon tank and pumping function and is expected to last anywhere from 20-25 years as is the norm for well-kept fire trucks. As for the price paid by the 100% member- owned, taxpayer-funded fire company? $600,000 which was a significant bargain according to Greer. “I was told shortly after we got the Walker Valley Fire Chief Jim Greer with the newest member of his company’s fleet.
