the buildings . Libolt said the project would hopefully bring more customers to the town ’ s businesses .
“ I think this acts as another catalyst for hamlet redevelopments ,” Libolt said . “ This piece of property has been vacant or in disrepair for some time and will hopefully continue to breathe new life into the community and the neighborhood .”

the commercial buildings until they have a specific lease hold tenant who wants to engage in a long-term design build relationship .
The project includes installation of parallel parking along Park Avenue to alleviate increased traffic . Recreational space will be combined with the town park to create open space .
The Wallkill Reformed Church ’ s thrift store and The Friends ’ Used Bookshop will lose the building they share as a part of the project , but both establishments are working to find alternate space .
The church ’ s thrift shop supports the snacks and kids club , which provides backpacks full of snacks on the weekends for children in need . Pastor Stan Seagren said the church is still deciding where it might move its thrift store . Building a new building on church property or moving into a recently vacant space in Wallkill are a couple options the church is considering . The future of the bookstore is still undecided .
Libolt said he hopes the project will be approved in the next few months . Final approval must be made by the planning board , and construction would begin three to six months after .
The previous project manager passed away while the project was still in discussion . When his widow contacted Libolt and asked him to continue it , he accepted .
“ I love this area . I love this community ,” Libolt said . “ I think it has all the elements of a great place to live and this project has been before the planning board for over a decade with various iterations trying to find consensus .”
Mark Watkins , town of Shawangunk planning board chair , said the board was pleasantly surprised when almost all of the comments in a public hearing regarding the project were positive .
“ We walked this town and there ’ s been nothing here ,” Bill Hecht , a resident for 35 years , said in planning board minutes from April 3 . “ Personally , this would be an opportunity for us to stay and move into one of these units and live and enjoy a walkable community ; it ’ s exciting .”
