Wallkill Center project could spell end for Friend’s Bookshop

the hamlet, losing the bookstore would be
a big loss to the community.
“We have a very loyal clientele and it’s
a shame that this is not gonna be available
possibly,” DeMeo said.
All of the shop’s profits go to the
Friends of the Wallkill Public Library,
which funds library programs.
Marla Landsman, treasurer for the
Friend’s, said the bookstore has raised
$19,000 for the Wallkill Library since
2010. The fund has funded kids’ summer
programs, museum passes, performers
for summer programs and equipment
such as a home cinema and TV and chairs
and a train set for the kids’ room. The
shop is the largest fundraiser for the fund.
“The fact that it supports the library
and library programs is a very special
connection,” Landsman said.
“It really is an essential part of the
community,” Adrienne Gelfand-Perine,
former president and board member of
Friends said. “It’s for the community, it’s
run by the community, and we want it to
be able to exist in the community.”

board that started the bookstore, said it

would also be a blow to lose a business in
a hamlet that already has so few.

young adult books are 25 cents. DeMeo
said the shop provides a valuable service
to the community because its merchandise
is so inexpensive.
“The same book would be selling for
$24.95 at Barnes and Nobles but here you
can get it for 75 cents or a dollar,” DeMeo
said. “We have a lot of people who can’t
really afford to go to Barnes and Noble or
Amazon or whatever.”
The shop also provides books to the
Wallkill’s prison library and to senior
residences. Many teachers will come
into the bookstore to buy books for the
classroom or bring their students for a
class trip, he said. The shop also draws
many senior citizens who want a low-cost
option.
The shop receives its books from private
donations. The library also donates older
books that fall out of circulation. Seven
volunteers run the store.
The shop is open Thursday, Friday
and Saturday afternoons, and will open
outside regular hours for school groups.
It’s also holding $2 bag days through
the summer during its regular hours.
Customers can grab a bag and fill it with
as many books as they want for only $2.
