Legislator Sullivan seeks re-election

By RACHEL COLEMAN
“ I ’ ve done exactly what I promised ,” said Orange County Legislator Roseanne Sullivan , confirming her intentions to run for re-election this fall .
Sullivan , a Democrat , is wrapping up her first full term as county legislator for the 18th District , which encompasses the town of Crawford and portions of the town of Wallkill . She also served the previous year after being elected to serve the remainder of former county legislator ’ s term after he resigned the post .
Recently , Crawford Town Councilman Robert Sassi announced his intentions to run for the seat . He has been endorsed by both the Republican and Conservative parties .
“ Robert Sassi is a nice man , but I don ’ t see him as an issues man . I don ’ t see him as an advocate ,” said Sullivan .
Meanwhile , Sullivan believes that she has gone to bat for her constituents and has done an “ excellent job .”
“ I helped save Valley View ,” Sullivan said . “ I also kept the costs down for the new government center .”
Sullivan explained that she felt — along with other county legislators — that a completely new center was a “ waste of money ” and the current plan saved taxpayer dollars . She stated she has “ stayed on top of every cost factor .”
Sullivan said she also came up with the idea for

but stipulated that there was to be no grandfather clause , then all existing outdoor wood boilers would have to make the same changes — even if they never posed a problem during the years they have been operating .
Hayes said the board has to take all of these factors into consideration as they cannot create a law targeting certain properties and they don ’ t want to create a hardship for owners that have never had a problem . “ The board realizes that there may be an issue there ,

nod from the town GOP , including Town Councilwoman Sheryl Melick , Town Councilwoman Cindy Voss , Town Clerk Tara Stickles , Town Justice Raynard Ozman and Highway Superintendent Charles Woznick .
“ I look forward to joining our experienced team of candidates as we knock on doors and make phone calls to our residents over the coming months ,” said Winchell in a statement . “ We will work very hard to earn their votes from now until Election Day . I also want to thank our current Supervisor Mike Hayes for his service to our community over the last decade . My running for Supervisor is not about anyone or anything other than achieving our goals of maintaining and improving town services , town finances and the overall quality of life for all of our residents .”
Winchell is a U . S . Air Force veteran , life-long town resident and founder of ROMAR , Inc ., offering design offering a retirement incentive to county employees instead of just laying them off .
“ If we laid everyone off it would actually have cost us money in benefits we ’ d be required to pay ,” said Sullivan , pointing out that the county executive hadn ’ t included those costs in his budget .
“ We saw a savings from attrition ,” said Sullivan . “ In the long run , we saved taxpayers millions of dollars .”
Sullivan said she has sponsored a bill to offer the retirement incentive this year and hopefully every year , or replace it with a separation agreement .
“ The county could be doing an even more efficient job ,” said Sullivan .
If re-elected , she would continue to be an advocate and safeguard taxpayer dollars .
“ I ’ ve saved a lot of money through the power of my voice . I ’ m a strong voice on that legislature . It ’ s why the Republicans in Crawford want me out . I ’ m doing too well for a Democrat ,” said Sullivan .
Sullivan was presented with the Geraldine Ferraro Public Service Award from the Orange County Democratic Women at the end of April .
Sullivan has served on the Pine Bush School Board and Town of Wallkill Zoning Board of Appeals , as well as in various education and youth organizations including the Orange County School Boards Association , Pine Bush Central School District ’ s PTA Council , Girl Scouts and the Town of Wallkill Boys & Girls Club .
but how do we fix it ? How do you go about it ?” said Supervisor Hayes .
In other business , the board accepted the bid of Hillcrest Farms at $ 2,800 for the hay at Benedict Farm . They also voted to list the Animal Control officer ’ s vehicle for auction .
The board congratulated Town Clerk Tara Stickles on her recertification as a Registered Municipal Clerk .
An executive session was held regarding the town ’ s highway department and a personnel matter , with no subsequent decisions .
and manufacturing services to industries , public utilities and construction trades in NYC and the tri-state area .
According to the committee , Winchell has “ established an effective working relationship with numerous local businesses , utilities , transportation , trade unions and most especially municipalities ” during his more than 25 years in business and his “ vision as supervisor is to establish a mutually supportive , professional work environment within the town ’ s departments so that the town ’ s residents are provided with the most cost-effective services possible .”
Town of Montgomery GOP Chairman Bill Kirnan stated in a press release on Friday that Rod Winchell “ shares the values that we all have as Republicans .”
“ He believes in our town and our party believes in him and the rest of our Republican ticket ,” said Kirnan . “ Rod ’ s outside perspective mixed with the institutional knowledge of our current board will make for a dynamic group of professionals to represent our town .”
