The Valley Central community will
have a second opportunity to vote on
the school district’s proposed 2018-2019
budget on June 19 after the Board of
Education approved an adjusted budget
of $104,023,293 during a special session on
May 29 at Berea Elementary School. The
new budget includes $180,418 in total cuts
from the $104,203,711 proposed budget
that taxpayers rejected on May 15. The
newly proposed budget features a 3.11
percent tax levy increase, down from
the 4.09 percent increase the original
spending plan sported.
The tax levy for the adjusted budget is
$60,998,614, which the district was able to
slice by $580,418 from the original plan via
spending cuts and by applying $400,000 in
excess fund balance to the adjusted levy.
The second budget was passed by a 6-1
margin during last Tuesday’s meeting,
with Board of Education President Sheila
Schwartz casting the only dissenting
vote. The newly approved spending plan
represents a 2.74 percent increase over
last year’s budget, a reduction from the
proposed 2.92 percent increase found in
the budget that residents voted down in
May.
The $180,418 in cuts in the new budget
include $13,863 in Central Office salary
increases, $12,000 in administrative
stipends, $7,500 for an administrator
retreat, $10,800 for 7th-grade and
8th-grade team leaders, $40,328 for
a secretarial retirement that will be
staffed from within, $28,355 for ES team
