Montgomery Vet honored by Mets
Montgomery resident Romeo Zaccone , was honored by the New York Mets as Veteran of the Day Sunday at Citi Field .
His nephew , former NASA Astronaut and friend of the Mets Mike Massimino , applied for the honor on his behalf . As a result , Romeo was invited to be a special guest at the Mets home game on July 16 . He was able to bring three guests , his wife Ann Zaccone , son Paul Zaccone , and daughter-in-law Esther Zaccone .
Romeo and his guests were given VIP status which included complimentary parking , tickets , and food / drink . The Mets gave Romeo a commemorative coin , honored him with an on-field ceremony during the game , and presented him with a flag that once flew over the stadium .
Many other friends and family members also attended the game , as well as several fellow parishioners from the Holy Name of Mary Church in Montgomery and fellow members of the Father Richard Joyce Council of the Knights of Columbus .
Granddaughter Elena Jordon notes that , “ many people came up to Romeo during the day and thanked him for his service , asking him for pictures and even autographs ! He was so appreciative of all the positive attention he received ”.
Romeo is a 94-year-old World War II Veteran . He was a Corporal in the United States Army and began his service in 1943 . Romeo served for three years and eight days in Fiji , New Guinea , and the Philippines . Honors Romeo received are the Asiatic Pacific SVC medal , the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon , and the WWII Victory Medal .
In addition to being honored by the Mets , Romeo also participated in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight last year . He thoroughly enjoyed both experiences .

would have myriad uses for local citizens . “ It would be somewhere for our seniors to gather and community members could use it for meetings , receptions , parties , things of that nature ,” Rumbold said . “ It would be an indoor facility for our summer rec children to use . We could show movies or do things like crafts in inclement weather . I think it would be very beneficial for our community .”
Revella notes that the proposed center could also be invaluable for the village ’ s summer camp program , among others . “ We could have a lot of activities publicly

that don ’ t require a fee right now ,” he said . “ There ’ s a large fee to use the firehouse building , which is the only large center in town right now . So this would be another option for us , especially during summer camp when there ’ s inclement weather . If the kids have to get indoors , we have to get them to Wooster Grove , which is almost impossible because we don ’ t have a busing system . So we end up having to call the parents to take them home . So this would give us that option and that opportunity with that facility there . Also , if the temperature gets really high , we have a cooling station right there .”
At its July 11 meeting , the board unanimously passed a pair of local laws refining village codes for the registration of rental properties and construction . Local Law No . 7 amends the rental property registry by “ expanding the jurisdiction of Chapter 221 to encompass all types of rental property including residential , commercial , industrial and any and all other types of rental properties ....” Local Law No . 8 amends the construction code by stipulating that all unpaid fees “ shall be assessed and levied ... and collected in the same manner as real property taxes .”
