Shawangunk clock fund nears the finish line

The town of Montgomery recently
filled all the vacant spots on its planning
board by appointing John Brown III and
Ryan McGuire and reappointing William
Kelly Jr.
Brown was an executive for Time
Warner for 33 years and worked in
franchising, management, delivery,
engineering and more. As a resident
of Montgomery, he has attended many
planning board meetings in the past.
“I’m hoping to bring those years of
experience to the town that we grew up
in,” Brown said.
Brown said he applied to the board to
make changes that enhance the livability
of the town. He hopes to control progress
by keeping the historical value of the
town intact while growing for the future
and encouraging interstate commerce
and local growth.
“That [growth] needs to be done in a
way that’s controlled, with an eye on the
future but not forgetting the past,” Brown
said.
Brown said he hopes to continue the
good work of the board.
McGuire is a civil engineer that
has more than 15 years of experience
working in land development for several The fundraising drive to establish a
community post clock in Shawangunk
has brought its organizers within
reach of funding the project, and a
new partnership is designed to push
the charity effort over the finish line.
Last year, the Shawangunk Main Street
Revitalization Committee started a
fundraising campaign in hopes of
collecting $25,000 to fund the clock,
and the group has now teamed up with
the Community Foundation of Orange
and Sullivan to establish the Town of
Shawangunk Community Clock Fund,
with the anticipation that together they
can make the project a reality.
The new partnership has allowed
the drive to collect major donations
from local businesses who support the
effort to bring a classic post clock to the
town. “It’s a partnership we’ve entered
into recently with the Community
Foundation, and the biggest benefit
to that is that the donations are tax
deductible,” Main Street Revitalization
Committee Chair Alex Danon explained.
“So it’s allowed us to acquire some bigger
donations. Walden Savings Bank made a
$5,000 sponsorship and Wallkill Valley
Federal Savings & Loan committed to a
$5,000 sponsorship.”
The green four-sided electronic clock
would feature gold trimming, and LED
backlighting technology would provide
a clear view of the time for passersby.
The clock would also have a festive
element, as it would play seasonal music
throughout the year timed to various
