The Wallkill Reformed Church brought in the new year with a new pastor .
Pastor Stan Seagren was welcomed to the congregation Jan . 1 after nine and a half years at Westdale Reformed Church in Hamilton , Ontario .
He attended the Western Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church in America after completing his undergraduate studies . Before his stay with the Westdale Reformed Church , he was placed in his first church when he was 29 years old in the small village of Danforth , Illinois , where he worked for six years then moved to a church in Cheboygan , Michigan where he worked for 17 years .
Seagren ’ s 32 years of work in ministry has brought him all over western and central United States and even a new country . Now , he is stepping into new uncharted territory .
“ I ’ ve never lived in the east ,” he says . “ It appealed to [ me and my wife ] to come back to the United States because our three kids are still here and we have a daughter who lives in New York City . The east also appealed to me because I like history and there ’ s a lot of history around [ Wallkill ].”
He says he is looking forward to getting

Wallkill Reformed Church welcomes new pastor

Pastor Stan Seagren was welcomed to the congregation Jan . 1 after nine and a half years at Westdale Reformed Church in Hamilton , Ontario .
to know his new surroundings and the Wallkill church community .
“ I sort of see the church and really being a disciple of Christ in three different ways ,” says Seagren . “ One : our identity . I look forward to helping people form their identity and ask , ‘ Who am I as a follower of Christ ? And two : community . We belong to each other , we support each other , we help each other grow and we serve each other . And three : mission , which to me is going where we ’ re called to go . A lot of times
that ’ s crossing a boundary ... of culture , ethnicity , or just going somewhere we ’ re just not comfortable with ... Crossing that boundary of mission can be exciting , too .”
Seagren grew up as a theater kid , loved being in the public eye and was fixated with Chicago columnist Mike Royko .
“ As a child I wanted to be a journalist and write a column ,” Seagren says . “ Mike Royko was my hero in Chicago newspapers , so I always thought it would be neat to write a column .”
As a child , he wanted to make a difference in the world and his interests eventually aligned with foreseeing a future pursuing ministry after he started dating his wife .
“ I didn ’ t get into the Reformed Church until I met my wife , Carrie ,” he says . “ I started going to her church and started getting interested in ministry . Her minister who married us also encouraged me into ministry .”
Thirty two years later he finds himself starting in a new place but one with familiar roots - a small town with close knit community .
“ My first congregation was probably around [ the size of the Wallkill Reformed Church ],” he says . “ So it ’ s sort of coming full circle .”
Worship is held every Sunday at 10 a . m . at the Wallkill Reformed Church , located at 45 Bridge St .

A public hearing is set for a tentative date of March 6 for the new Wallkill Center , a 42 unit mixed use development in the Hamlet of Wallkill .
“ This will be a market rate upscale mixed use development design to fit in a hamlet setting ,” says Keith Libolt , President and CEO of AHC , the construction , consulting and development company working on the
Wallkill Center project . “ It will be a combination of single family , duplex style townhomes , commercial and multifamily apartments .”
The Wallkill Center will include nine buildings and eight lots to allow for home ownership as well as upscale rentals . During last week ’ s Town of Shawangunk Planning Board meeting , Libolt and board members discussed
the possibility of a recreational area to accompany the 42 unit development . It is still unknown if the recreational area will be included and if it will be only for residents of the development or open to the public .
The public hearing will be held at Shawangunk Town Hall , 14 Central Avenue at 7 p . m .
