By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] C omplete with Santa hats and sleigh bells, Montgomery Elementary School (MES) kindergarten students erupted into a rousing rendition of “Feliz Navidad” for a crowd of smiling parents and residents at the corner of Union and Clinton Street in Montgomery. The entire kindergarten grade— approximately 80 students—caroled around the village of Montgomery last Friday to spread some holiday cheer. The students sang holidays classics such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” They started their outing at the village of Montgomery police station before caroling outside various businesses and landmarks in the village, such as Wildfire Café, village hall and the corner of Clinton and Union Street. While the grade has sung at the nursing home for Valentine’s Day, this was the first time they have caroled in the village for the holidays. MES principal Matthew Canino said the event engages the students with the village. “We try to do lots of activities to engage with the local community,” Canino said. MES kindergarten students carol at the corner of Union and Clinton Streets in the village of Montgomery. The village of Montgomery police department escorted the students as they walked through the village. MES kindergarten teacher Julie Ardito said the school is fortunate to have a supportive community and to be in a village where the students are able to walk into town. “[Caroling] is just to bring joy to the community,” Ardito said. Larkin delivers one final gift to Walden Continued from page 1 2019. The building, designed to seat 300 people, will serve as a bad-weather shelter and cooling center for campers in the Walden summer recreation program and a daily gathering place for the Walden Senior Citizens. It will also be available for other community organizations when needed. Larkin, who took the time to greet each of the young singers from the Fox Hill Community, delivered the check from the State Senate’s Member Items fund. It may well be his final check, as he will retire from public service on New Year’s Eve and will be replaced by James Skoufis, who was elected last month to replace him. “I have 9 or 10 days left,” Larkin said last week. “I want you to know I will be working on the 31st.” State Senator Bill Larkin poses with assorted Walden officials and Town of Montgomery Supervisor Ron Winchell after delivering a $300,000 check to the village.
