Sr ., and more than a dozen other friends of Speights attended the press conference on Friday , where law enforcement officials explained why the arrest of a suspect in the killing of Speights , 20 , a Scotchtown firefighter , took almost a year .
The 911 call about the stabbing at a party at 55 Paddock Drive came in at 12:49 a . m . on January 1 , said Tripodo . Speights had been stabbed multiple times after trying to break up a fight at a party attended by 200 people , where several skirmishes had reportedly broken out , Tripodo said . Then police received 300 leads , collected 150 pieces of evidence , conducted 250 interviews , executed search warrants in New York and New Jersey , and searched 40 electronic devices , including frame by frame examination of video . Eighty investigators at multiple law enforcement agencies were
Jauntae Brown involved in multiple states , including Florida , Tripodo said .
“ The arrest took so long because we wanted to get it right ,” said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler . “ We have never had that number of electronic devices examined .”
The investigation continues , he said , and he urged people to provide whatever information they have .
“ If you didn ’ t say something you knew when you were interviewed , call the New York State Police and say , ‘ Maybe I didn ’ t say everything I knew .’ You may not know its significance .
Brown will be charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon , which could result in a life sentence , Hoovler said . For violating the social host law , charges may also be filed against adults who allowed underage drinking at the Paddock Drive party
Ricky Schiaffo Jr . ( r ) recalled his late friend Justin Speights
where the murder was committed . Hoovler said that possibility is being “ investigated .” Two arrests related to the murder investigation were made previously .
After the press conference , Schiaffo , recalled the night of the Paddock Drive party . Many of Speights ’ friends had gone . Yielding to his girlfriend , he had decided not to go , but he got a phone call from a friend who had , letting him know Speights had been stabbed . When he drove to the party , the street was blocked , so he went to Orange Regional Medical Center , where Speights was taken .
“ I stood all night in the hospital waiting room . It was filled with friends and firefighters ,” he said .
Even though he had not been at the party , he was interviewed several times by the police , as they sought the code for Speights ’ cell phone and other information , he said . In addition to socializing together , Schiaffo said he often saw Speights on firefighting calls , such as car accidents . He last saw Speights at his 20th birthday party in December , at Buffalo Wild Wings , joking and doing voice impressions .
