Montgomery hosts Pearl Harbor remembrance By JASPREET GILL [email protected] “The biggest casualty is to be forgotten” said Montgomery Pearl Harbor Remembrance Committee Chairman Timothy Dempsey. “By being here today we are honoring those who served and who perished. That to me is really what counts.” Montgomery’s American Legion Post 521 and Maybrook’s VFW Post 2064 held their annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony at Powell’s Landing on the shore of the Wallkill River this past Thursday. “This is a day where tears flow very freely,” said Walter Schneider of Post 521. The event began with an opening prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, people sharing their memories of the Pearl Harbor bombing, a moment of silence for lives lost at Pearl Harbor and in World War 2, Taps, a 21-gun salute and a symbolic toss of the flowered wreath into the Wallkill River. On December 7, 1941, the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor was bombed by 360 Japanese warplanes. This incident led to the U.S. entry into World War II. Members of the Montgomery’s American Legion Post 521 and Maybrook’s VFW Post 2064 march down Powell’s Landing on the shore of the Wallkill River this past Thursday for their annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony. “Over 16 ships of the U.S. Navy were damaged or destroyed, over 2,000 seamen perished and a couple thousand were wounded,” said Dempsey. “The U.S. came back to devastate Japan and ultimately prevailed in World War II.” The ceremony ended with the National Anthem and coffee and cookies were served in the Village of Montgomery Teen Ce
