On one blue-sky weekday morning,
children were engrossed in play at James
Olley Community Park. They shook a
rainbow-colored tarp as other children
ran underneath. Another group of kids
played on a state-of-the-art playground.
A group of older kids threw foam balls
at each other in a game of dodgeball. The
sounds of laughter and childs’ play filled
the park.
The last days of the Village of Walden’s
Summer Camp were in full swing. The
half- and full-day program runs every
July and August for boys and girls age
five to 15.
The camp includes traditional summer
camp activities, such as swimming,
games, nature trail activities, field trips
and more.
“It gives kids something fun to do all
summer,” Village of Walden Recreation
Coordinator Michael Bliss said.
Bliss said the program occupies
children’s time during the summer in
constructive ways. It also provides
working parents with a break.
“The program has been booming for
years. Parents love it. The community
loves it,” Bliss said.
Bliss said the program has about 300
children this summer. Enrollment is down
slightly from previous years, although
Bliss said this seems to be a county-wide
trend. The camp also employed about
50 counselors, including high school
students, college students and teachers
on summer break.
Camp ends Aug. 15 and culminates with
a free family picnic on Friday, Aug. 16 at
5 p.m. at James Olley Park. The free event
includes food and is open to everyone.
To register for next year, visit
villageofwalden.org. Enrollment is always
open and there is no cap on attendance.
