Mixed reviews for SEC
plans at STA caucus
BY SEAN CREAMER
Participants at the Security
Traders Association’s 80th
Annual Market Structure
Conference have mixed
opinions concerning the use
of a website that collects trade
data from the US markets to
support the SEC’s plans to
better understand US equity
markets.
In a speech that opened the
event last week, SEC chairman
Mary Jo White detailed plans to
use a Market Information Data
Analytics System (MIDAS),
which was built by highfrequency trading technology
vendor Tradeworx, to process
and comprehend equity
markets data.
The data, which comes from
the consolidated tapes and
proprietary exchange feeds,
will also be posted on the SEC
website for broad review, White
stated.
While participants agreed
this initiative will provide a
deeper look into equity market
structure as intended, some
questioned the timing and
asked why the move wasn’t
made sooner. Some also noted
the initiative may be a simple
ploy to instill consumer
