At 100 Miles you will earn a Distance Patch and a Compass ( I just know there are folks out there that get as lost as me !!!). 150 MILES earns you yet another Distance Patch with a TWH Book , at 200 MILES you are eligible for a Distance Patch and a Tee Shirt , ( I WANT ONE !!!) at 250 MILES a Distance Patch ( by now your jacket is covered in patches YIPEE !!!!) and a blanket for your horse . The attainment of the ultimate goal of 300 MILES gets you a Distance Patch AND A HOODIE ( I REALLY want one of these ). Look out Timex we are gonna hit the beautiful trail when it warms up .
Trail riding is an excellent way for riders and horses to bond and work on communication aids in a new environment . The key to any good trail ride is ensuring you are prepared with the proper equipment and safety measures .
Trail riding is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the bond with your horse by overcoming new obstacles together and encountering situations not found in a show ring or arena . These can be anything from learning to side pass over a downed branch , jumping a small log , or opening a gate . Opportunities abound on the trail for new ways to approach a trail course obstacle .
However , riders must always be prepared to confront the unexpected when out on the trail . It is always a good idea to ride with a friend , and never leave the friend behind . Wear a certified helmet that fits snugly and always buckle the chin strap . Always carry a fully charged cell phone or satellite phone , first-aid kit , flashlight , water , hoof pick , map , compass and GPS receiver . Take advantage of the technology available to you . Carry an ID and put identification information inside your helmet . Be sure to include your name , address , phone number and emergency contacts . Make sure to rest and walk after periods of gaiting . Don ’ t over do it ! Use your manners ! Be friendly to other people you encounter on the trail . Leave one horse length between horses , two if gaiting . Pass on the left at reduced speed after
