Yard Waste and Autumn Leaves - Dangers to Horses

As the weather starts to cool , many homeowers turn their attention to working on their yards . During this time , it is import that horse owners be aware that various yard trimmings can be toxic to horses and other livestock .
A small amount of yew shrub trimings , as little as half a pound , can be fatal with consumed by a horse . Occasionally precluded by shaking , muscle weaknees , and / or difficulty breathing , death can occur within 24 hours . There is no known anitdote for yew poisoning .
Additionally , azaleas and rhododendrons , both common ornamental plants , contain toxins , especially in their foliage . Two to three pounds of either of these plants may produce a severe toxic reaction . Rhododendrons more commonly retain green leaves year-round so they appear as more appealing forage to horses .
Prevention is critical to make sure your horse stays healthy . If you have nearby neighbors or if you hire a gardender to see to your own lawn , be sure to educate them on the toxic effect yard waste may have on your horse ( s ). At the minimum , consider posting signs as a reminder not to throw anything into the pastures or paddocks .
