Larry and Linda Starnes wtih Tommy Hall Tommy Hall and Taylor Harvey - Youth Sportsmanship Winner individual who has supported the organization. This year’s recipient spent 41 years attending, show- ing, and volunteering at The International. This year, although Charles Howard, wasn’t there physically, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house as they celebrated the life of Mr. Charles and his many accom- plishments, not only as a horseman, but as a teacher, friend and mentor to many. Watching the celebration of Charlie’s life on screens above the audience,  love radiated across the room as all in attendance remembered Charlie, his pranks, his LOVE of the TWH, his smile, his LOVE OF WHOA and his willing spirit. The horse industry truly is a fam- ily. RIP Charles Burton Howard.  The Award Banquet is all about awards BUT it is also the perfect time to see friends you don’t often see such as Marianne Springer all the way down from Wis- consin. The Carolinas were well represented and I got a chance to speak quickly with Mikal Spooner and her all grown up and pretty daughter, Ariel. Seems like just yesterday that Mikal was younger than Ariel and flying around the poles and barrels. Boy time sure flys ! Kevin Williams was having a fun time accepting awards with his “blue” winners. We often just get a chance to say HI as we pass a table but enjoyed see- ing Maria Redmond, Rhonda Ingle, Dennis & Susan Lindsay Atkins - WHOA Quest Youth Flat Shod Winner A memory table celebrating Charlie Howard. 14 • Walking On
