Phillip Dewayne Houchins
You may not know our Hall of Fame Inductee by his name
Phillip Dewayne Houchins, but everybody knows Sput, short
for Sputnik
His great grandfather gave him that nickname. Sputnik was
in Space about the same time as Sputnik was born on earth.
Sput’s claim to fame is being the GREATEST gateman in
Kentucky. His ability to listen for the number of horses that
are supposed to come in the ring & shut the gate at the right
time is renowned.
Sput’s ability to remember names & friendliness to compet-
itors make him a favorite at horse shows.
He has been a member of the Edmonson County Lions
Club and a member of the Edmonson County Saddle Club for
decades. Edmonson County would like to think of Sput as
the World’s greatest Paddock Master. Many of Sput’s family
came to the SCKWHA Banquet to say THANK YOU for
this recognition into the South Central KY Walking Horse
Hall of Fame.
