Obstacle course competitions consist of the Tandem Obstacle Course which requires a team of two horses and riders complete 12 stages of different obstacles , the Obstacle Course which one horse and rider complete 12 different obstacles , and a Novice obstacle course which a novice rider can compete with the assistance of a mounted coach . All obstacle course competitions are timed with penalties assessed for refusals or fails .
