‘KG AYER, KENANGAN ABADI’
Kampong Ayer, Kenangan Abadi or Living Memory is
the first photographic book ever published on the
historical area of Kampong Ayer which was launched on
2 Dec 2012. The book is written by Dato Dr Hj Abd Latif
Hj Ibrahim, a Brunei historian and does not only contain
writings and images that could spur nostalgia amongst
current and former village residents but also unveil the
history and heritage of its existence. It will be a vital
reference in identifying the early history of Brunei and the
water village for foreigners and locals alike.
This fascinating publication of 252 pages will take the
readers back to how the Sultanate of Brunei looked many years ago. There are more than 300
pictures from the olden days to the present, including some photos from the early 20th century. The
photos will remind people what an important part of the country's history Kampong Ayer has played.
"There can be no doubt that Brunei is the 'Kampong Ayer' and 'Kampong Ayer' is Brunei. The growth
of water villages is a historical phenomenon, without which the state of Brunei Darussalam would not
have existed," said the author. The book also reveals the various activities and occasions showcasing
the nation's economic agents such as the Padian, who are no longer seen these days, the venue of
boat racing, and the involvement of royalty in water village activities.
Since the existence of the water village in the yesteryears, the concept has always been that of the
Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) as the village is inhabited by Malay citizens, the mosque as an Islamic
symbol, and the monarchy institution visible in the form of a royal palace prominently located next to
the water village. Source: Borneo Bulletin, 2 Dec 2012 and Ranoadidas.
