Museums & History - For over 10,000 years , the Dakota tribe have revered Lake Waconia , once known as Meday Wa Ko Ni Ya , meaning “ lake of the spring ” or “ life-giving lake .” Early settlers adopted this significant name , which evolved into “ Lake Waconia .”
Incorporated as a village in 1880 , Waconia blossomed into a sought-after summer destination with the development of Coney Island and the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1886 . Today , you can visit the Carver County Historical Society to learn all about the history of the area .
