Instead of a Letter
Tobacco smoke had eaten away the air.
The room
became a chapter in Kruchenykh’s hell.
Remember beyond this window,
how frenzied I stroked your hands
for the first time.
There you sit today,
iron-hearted.
Another day –
you will scorn me perhaps,
then drive me out.
In the turbid corridor my broken arm
Shall hover, shivering, before its sleeve.
I’ll flee,
I will throw my body into the street.
Wild,
without my senses,
I shall flog myself with despair.
