A N TA R C T I C a 4 Holiday on ice by Hailey Boone Michele Anderson Biological sciences sophomore and Biological systems engineering senior Gainesville, VA McLean, VA College of Science Quarterly When most people think of studying abroad, they often think of Europe or South America. Very few people consider Antarctica, the coldest driest place on the planet. Why would one want to go there? The answer is simple, because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a place that a majority of the world’s population cannot say they’ve seen, to explore a world that is so vastly different from any other environment and an opportunity to reconnect with nature. The Hokies Abroad Antarctica course consisted of an online course in the fall, and a field course during Winter break. In the fall online course, there were weekly lectures on a wide range of topics surrounding the history of Antarctica. There were also weekly readings and writing assignments. The online portion of the course allowed students to interact with professors and researchers who have spent their lives dedicated to learning about Antarctica and helped lay the academic foundation for what we were about to experience.
