15 Outstanding Young Alumni Named Adrienne Hoffman has been named Outstanding Recent Alumna from the College of Science. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in biological sciences in 1998, Hoffman went on to earn her master’s degree and begin a career as a teacher at Potomac Falls High School in Potomac Falls, Va. Since then, Hoffman’s teaching career has included numerous awards and honors. She participated in a prestigious workshop on molecular markers, obtained certification to assist in the Smithsonian Institute’s biodiversity teaching and discovery project, and was selected at the national level for Who’s Who Among High School Teachers. David M. Janicke has been named Outstanding Recent Graduate Student from the college. Janicke earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2001 and has since be- www.aip.org/pnu/2007/split/820-1.html. Russell T. Jones, professor of psychology, was part of a national study led by Harvard University and funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health that was cited in the December 7, 2007, issue of the New York Times. The longitudinal study of more than 1,000 New Orleans residents has so far determined that mood problems, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress, were at a high level after Hurricane Katrina and that the delayed government response may have made the problem worse. Issue No. 5 SUMMER 2008 Michael Hochella Assistant physics Professor Jonathan Link played a key role in one of the American Institute of Physics’ Ten Top Physics Stories for 2007. Link was involved in the MiniBooNE experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. The project solved a mystery in neutrino physics, apparently dismissing the possibility of a fourth type of neutrino. Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. Recipients are noted for their “scientifically distinguished efforts to advance science or it applications.” Patricia Dove come a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida. He joined the university faculty in 2003 after serving as a postdoctoral fellow at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His areas of interest include pediatric psychology, pediatric obesity and health promotion, pediatric feeding issues, and health care utilization. In addition to his teaching and research, Janicke has authored dozens of book chapters and C o l l e g e Patricia Dove, professor in the Department of Geosciences, has been named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). This prestigious award is bestowed upon approximately 12 individuals worldwide per year. According to the AGU, nominees “must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences.”
