Message from the Dean
o f
— Nikki Giovanni, University Distinguished Professor, poet
We had planned earlier in the year to have this issue
celebrate the achievements of a remarkable family that has strong ties to the college. We thought
that Mary Blackwood, a member of the roundtable,
and the chair of our Campaign Steering Committee,
exemplifies in key fashion the university’s motto of
Ut Prosim. But viewed against the accomplishments
of the many members of her immediate family who
are associated in one way or another with Virginia
Tech, the true essence of the Hokie Spirit stands
revealed in extraordinary fashion. I believe that
especially in light of what happened, the essence
needs re-affirmation, and I am honored to have this
issue dedicated to showcasing her story and that of
her family.
After reading this issue, I hope you will come away
with an even greater sense of pride in our efforts
here in the college, in the university, and among our
dedicated alums, friends, and supporters, such as
Mary Blackwood.
Together we will march forth toward our objectives. Together we will re-affirm our commitment to
excellence, and innovation, and all that is precious
about Virginia Tech.

Issue No.4 Fall 2007
irginia Tech experienced a tragedy this past spring.
It was an experience that tested the mettle of the
Hokie family, and as with all tragedies, we drew
comfort from the familial bonds formed over the
many years among alumni, students, faculty and
staff. Those bonds define us, and the spring tragedy
demonstrated anew the robustness of Virginia Tech
and the College of Science. The memory of April 16
and those we lost will stay with us. But the recognition of that family spirit will enable us to continue
on our path to the goals we had already set for ourselves before then.
