A member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences and a University Distinguished Professor, Patricia Dove’s research centers on the development of life and landscapes over deep time, while her main focus is on helping students build their careers. Dove holds the C.P. “Sally” Miles Professorship, established in 1986 through a gift from Melvin “Cy” Young and named in honor of Clarence P. “Sally” Miles, a 1901 Virginia Tech alumnus and a longtime faculty member who inspired and mentored generations of students. Young created a charitable remainder trust that generated a lifetime income stream for him and his wife and also endowed the Miles Professorship. Young’s well-planned generosity will honor Sally Miles in perpetuity and help the College of Science attract and retain exceptional faculty members, such as Dove.
