From volcano summits to rainforest waterfalls, Sitka offers trails that belong on every hiker’ s list. Here are the must-dos:
15 Mt. Edgecumbe [ Full Day ] On Kruzof Island, you can hike the dormant volcano Mt. Edgecumbe. Reach the summit trailhead
by water taxi with Alaska Wild Coast or Outer Coast Charters, then spend the day climbing to panoramic summit views.
7 Kaasda Héen( Indian River) Trail [ Half Day: 6 hrs | 9 mi / 14.5 km round trip | Elev. gain: 1,000 ft / 305 m ] A lush rainforest hike along a salmon stream ending at a waterfall. Be cautious of bears during late July through to August when salmon are running and / or spawning.

Gavan Hill to Harbor Mountain [ Half Day: 4-6 hrs | 12 mi / 19.3 km round trip | Elev. gain: 3,300 ft / 1,005 m ] A steep climb through forest into alpine ridges and wildflower meadows, with sweeping views over Sitka Sound. Guided outings available through Tongass Treks or Alpenglow Adventures Sitka.
9 Verstovia Trail [ Half Day: 6 hrs | 5 mi / 8 km round trip | Elev. gain: 3300 ft / 1005 m ] A rugged ascent with breathtaking views of Sitka below. Stock up on gear at Sitka Work and Rugged Gear Store, or Tongass Threads before you go.
16 Sea Lion Cove Trail [ Half to Full Day ] Accessible only by boat or plane, this trail winds through forest and muskeg before opening to a wild beach where sea lions and surfers share the surf. Hire a water taxi, or book a floatplane dropoff through Baranautica Air Service or Harbor Air Services for the ultimate adventure.
