IN SITKA

You open your eyes after a restful night’ s sleep. For a moment, you can’ t quite place where you are. Then it hits you: you’ re in Sitka, visiting relatives for the holiday season. It feels early, but when you glance at the clock it’ s nearly 9:00 am and still dark outside. December here means only about six hours of daylight. This is like a Hallmark movie, you think, except instead of a snow-covered town full of lumberjacks, you’ ve landed on a rainy island surrounded by fishermen.
