FISHING SITKA:
Your Questions Answered
Fishing is one of Sitka’ s biggest draws, but if it’ s your first trip, you probably have a few questions. Here’ s what to know before you cast a line.
Q: DO I NEED A LICENSE?
Yes. All anglers age 16 and older must carry an Alaska sport fishing license. Short-term licenses are available online, in town, or through your charter! You can buy them over the counter at LFS Marine Supply, Market Center, and Cascade Convenience Store.
Q: DO I NEED A GUIDE, OR CAN I FISH ON MY OWN?
“ Visitors can fish from shore, but charters make the experience easier. We supply the gear, licenses, and local knowledge that help maximize your time on the water.” Captain Parker, Sitka Expeditions
Q: WHAT KIND OF FISH CAN I EXPECT TO CATCH?
“ Sitka is famous for salmon and halibut, but depending on the season, you’ ll also reel in lingcod, rockfish, or black cod. Every trip has the potential for variety.” Captain David, Angling Unlimited
Q: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FISH AFTER WE CATCH THEM?
Choosing a full-service charter will make the process a breeze from start to finish.“ We take care of the entire process in-house, cleaning, vacuum-packing, and flashfreezing your catch so it’ s ready to travel. Our goal is to make sure you head home with Sitka’ s bounty in perfect condition.” Captain Jack, Cast Alaska Charters & Lodge
Q: HOW CAN I BRING MY FISH HOME?
If you’ re staying somewhere with a freezer, after processing your fish, you can get an insulated fish box from SeaMart Quality Foods or AC Lakeside, pack it up, and check it as a piece of luggage through Alaska Airlines, where they will store it on their on-board freezer.
Q: WHERE CAN I TAKE MY CATCH TO BE COOKED?
Cold Water Bar & Grill offers a service where you can bring your fresh-caught fish in and they will cook it for you to enjoy.
Q: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Layers are essential. Weather can shift quickly on the water, so pack a warm base and build from there. Most charters provide rain gear and boots, but check ahead to be sure. Don’ t forget your polarized sunglasses and camera!
