WHAT YOU CAN HUNT
Sitka Black-Tailed Deer The most common species, with a season stretching from August through December. Hunters chasing the rut often plan trips in late fall, when deer are most active and snow has driven them down the mountains.
Brown Bears Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof Islands( also known as the ABCs) are home to healthy brown bear populations. Non-residents are required to hire a registered guide to hunt them. You won’ t many find black bears on the ABCs, but they do inhabit many other Southeast islands and the mainland.
Mountain Goats Among Alaska’ s most demanding hunts, goat season runs August through December by permit only. The steep climbs and unpredictable weather make this a true test of skill and stamina.
GUIDED HUNTS
For species like goats or brown bears, working with an experienced guide is a great way to take on Southeast Alaska’ s terrain. Parker Guide Service has nearly three decades of experience leading yacht-based hunts aboard the 80-foot Alaskan Harvest. After rugged days in the field, hunters return to a warm bunk, hot meals, and the expertise of guides who know the region inside and out.
INDEPENDENT HUNTS
For independent hunters, Sitka is the perfect jumpingoff point. Gear up in town at Sitka Work & Rugged Gear Store or LFS Marine Supply, then head into the field with a transport service that gets you where the game is.
Alaskan Outlaw Adventures operates out of the 67- foot M / V Desperado, a vessel built for long-range liveaboard trips. They specialize in transport hunts for Sitka

black-tailed deer, along with cast-and-blast outings that combine fishing and hunting with time on the water. Duck hunts are available under permit, and the boat doubles as your floating basecamp with bunks, a galley, and freezers to hold your harvest.
Other options include floatplane drop-offs with Baranautica Air Service or Harbor Air Services, or water taxi rides with Alaska Wild Coast and Outer Coast Charters. For those who’ d rather camp ashore, the Annahootz Alaskan Adventures’ Floathouse and U. S. Forest Service cabins around Baranof Island offer remote stays reachable only by boat or plane.
However you choose to hunt, the moment your pilot or captain pulls away, you’ ll feel the quiet, the solitude, and the challenge that makes a Sitka hunt unforgettable.
