Along with project viewing, attendees of Celebration of the Classics learned about the probability of the Trojan War actually taking place from our guest speaker, archeologist Sarah Beale of the University of Cincinnati. She concluded that while there was definitely evidence of a fight, and passed around artifacts to prove it, unfortunately there is no evidence of the Trojan Horse or the golden apple. However, there was no evidence disproving those parts of the story, so who knows? The war could have been started by petty goddesses and modern classicists just can’t prove it. The celebration concluded with Aenead-themed certamen, a first taste of the game for sixth graders who will begin Latin 1 next year. Overall, the event was a success and a great way to learn more about the classic texts that we all adore so much.
