Recruitment
Within the last year, Vorys has implemented or expanded a number of initiatives to recruit diverse lawyers, including:
• Awarding the firm’s George Corey Diversity Scholarship to two diverse law students who have accepted associate positions within
the firm which will commence following law school graduation and sitting for the bar exam. Vorys also recently expanded the eligibility
requirements for the scholarship to encourage a broader, more diverse applicant pool. The George Corey Scholarship is an annual
scholarship of $10,000 for diverse law students (historically underrepresented racial or ethnic minorities as well as LGBTQ) whose spirit,
drive and commitment leads them to pursue a career in the legal profession and who have demonstrated leadership in improving the
quality of life in their communities and/or schools.
• Establishing a formal 1L Diversity Fellowship Program for first-year law students who are members of a historically underrepresented
racial or ethnic minority group. Fellows spend most of the summer at Vorys, but they also spend two weeks on assignment at Abercrombie
& Fitch working in their in-house legal department.
• Funding two inaugural diversity scholarships with the Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation: (OWBF) (1) the OWBF-Vorys Leadership Institute
Diversity Scholarship (2018-2019 Class) to provide a diverse female lawyer with the opportunity to attend the OWBF Leadership Institute
and (2) the OWBF-Vorys Law Student Diversity Scholarship (2018) to advance the career of a qualified law student who aspires to
promote D&I efforts through their legal practice.
• Continued support of the CBA Minority Clerkship Program. More than 20 years ago, a Vorys partner co-founded the nationally recognized
Minority Clerkship Program sponsored by the Columbus Bar Association, and this retired partner continues to serve as an active committee
member. The program’s goals are to provide legal experience and education for minority law students through summer placement at local
law firms, government and corporate offices and to increase the number of, and more fully integrate, minority attorneys into the Columbus
legal community.
• Vorys participates in events and regional/national diversity job fairs to meet talented law students, judicial clerks and lateral candidates.
These include events sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, the Black Law Students Association and the
Lavender Law Conference, a career fair sponsored by the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Bar Association.
