She swam her first National Swim meet in April of 2018 at the YMCA Nationals , where she place 5th overall for the 100y breaststroke , and her relay team placed 4th . All of her hard work has paid off . Leah is a National Swimmer – YCF Storm , YMCA Central Florida ; 3x State runner up- High School State Championships ; 5th place YMCA National Championship and 23rd ranking Speedo Junior Championship . In addition , she is on the Varsity Swim Team at Freedom High School , wherein her Freshman year and the first time in the school ’ s history , Leah led them to Regionals and onto the State championship attaining 2nd place in the State for the 100y Breastroke and 7th in the 100y Freestyle . She repeated that same victory in her sophomore year , attaining 2nd and 7th in the State , respectively .
We will not have to wait long to see what Leah does next . If her story has anything to do with it , Leah will be adding ‘ Beamonesque ’ to this stage of her life as she had done previously . In the words of Dr . Seuss , Oh the Places That She Will Go ! n
Is There A Midshipman In The House ? Leah is not only an amazing athlete , but she is also a phenomenally hard-working student , and that too is paying off . She has always been intrigued by integrating skills necessary to succeed in STEM ( Science , Technology , Engineering , and Math ). The creative innovation of the subject sparked her interest in Mechanical Engineering . Leah had the desire to attend college and still pursue her dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer . With that plan in mind and the encouragement of a few key people in her life , Leah set her sights for the United States Naval Academy to study Mechanical Engineering and minor in Chinese .
The United States Naval Academy is ranked # 6 in National Liberal Arts Colleges . Naval Academy admissions are extremely selective , with an acceptance rate of only 8 % -9%.
USNA is the most competitive of the service academies in terms of admission . Leah required a nomination from a nominating authority to attend the Naval Academy even with her outstanding grades . Not a stranger to hard work , Leah went straight to the top , petitioning the office of Congresswoman Val Demings , who is quoted as saying , “ One of my favorite responsibilities as a Member of Congress is to nominate exceptional young men and women to the U . S . Service Academies . I am extremely proud of all that has been accomplished by Ms . Gentry-Tuney and all of our nominees and excited to see what they do next .”
