IN REMEMBRANCE : NATHAN ZIMMERMAN , MD MAY 25 , 1927 - OCT . 1 , 2020

Nate Zimmerman was a humanist who embraced life with

enthusiasm and passion . As a young sailor , he survived the horrors of the World War II Philippine campaign , and afterwards chose medical school .
His family medical practice began with Valley Medical Associates in Louisville ’ s South End where he practiced for the next 57 years . His practice included delivering babies , minor office surgeries , hospital admissions and rounds , house calls and office management ( he was the leader ). He and his associates took on all comers and built the largest practice in that area of Louisville , caring for the sick and injured 24 / 7 .
Nate was a competitive soul in life and sports ( a catcher on the University of Louisville baseball team and on the golf course ). He balanced that keenness with compassion and gentleness , ever present
for his patients and his large extended family .
His first wife , Bobett Abroms , bore four children , and died in 1989 . He later married Ann Benjamin Levine with her four children . These eight children have now 20 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren ( perhaps by the time this epistle is published , more additions ).
Nathan began practice with simple handwritten doctor notes , a dial telephone and a primitive answering service . He was highly intelligent and aggressive , so he brought Valley Medical Associates into the second half of the 20 th century with the first Louisville doctor ’ s office to use IBM equipment , long before computers .
This smart , competitive , loving spirit will long be missed and remembered . -Morris Weiss , MD
