Primary Care Award at the Caritas Foundation Doctors’ Ball in
2004, Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky Medical
Association in 2008 and was named the 2009 Ephraim McDowell
Physician of the Year. He also was named in 1980 as one of the “200
Best Doctors in America.” The Charlie Smith, Jr. Annual Lectureship
in Medicine was established in 1987 in honor of Dr. Smith by his
dear friend and patient, Armor Hugh Platt Taylor, and his professor,
Dr. Letitia S. Kimsey.
Dr. Smith was a friend to so many. He loved his colleagues, and
he loved his patients. He knew that he would miss his colleagues
so much that when he retired, he started the “Doctors' Doughnut
Club” on Monday mornings so he could keep the “Methodist
Mafia” together. This has subsequently become a club for all retired
physicians to meet and discuss topics of the day. He and my mother

also developed great friendships through their church, Christ United
Methodist, and sang in the choir. In retirement, he also volunteered
on the Board of Family Health Centers, KMA’s National Legislative
Activities Committee and at the Red Bird Mission and Health
Outreach in Eastern Kentucky. He also attended classes at the
Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville and drove truckload after
truckload of clothes and items to the Henderson Settlement in his
beloved Eastern Kentucky.
Husband, father, friend, scholar, leader and doctor: Charlie Smith
was greatly admired, but even more beloved.
