Maps in Portland on Labor Day Weekend. Fortunately, Avenza Maps has recently added
UTM grid references (see below) so this issue is resolved so long as you’re not on one of
Barry’s navigation exercises using AGD66.
For OziExplorer or general use you will need to download from the website, which gives
access to the map files stored on a Google drive. For Avenza Map users the maps are
available through the map store, with individual maps being free or you can purchase a
bundle of maps for a nominal sum of about $10 – this is really a donation to the map maker,
but most of the money will go to Avenza, so you’re better off making a direct donation
through the website.
Based on the website list of updates these maps seem to have been actively developed over
at least the past two to three years with regular releases and additions.
At this stage I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the maps beyond some basic checks, but given
the cost what do you have to lose by trying them out (is that a Trumpism …), but perhaps
have a back up until you gain confidence. To me the obvious piece of extra information that
would make these an amazing resource would be track classifications – maybe something
the 4WD community could assist with and create a great resource for everybody.
