Many people right now feel like they are ready for 2020 to be over. So much has
been packed onto us that we are just ready to check out and hope that 2021 is better.
To that I say, that 2020 has been the biggest wake up call in history and as much as
we want to just skip it, we need it to happen. We needed to see the major failures in
our healthcare system that was nowhere near prepared to handle a global pandemic.
We needed to see the failures and lies that constantly come out of our government’s
mouth on everything from healthcare, to the state of our economy. We needed to see
a video that for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, we watched a man plead for his life and
call out for his mother because he knew that he was going to die. Because if we didn’t,
we could just continue to go on with our lives, most of us blind to what is really
going on around us. Believe me, I hate to say this because as it stands here in America,
over 100,000 deaths had to happen for us to even open our eyes. And even still,
some people are more worried about when the damn stores are going to open up so
they can go out and get their Prada shoes and their favorite sandwich than worry
about the breaking of the world and the blood that flows down the streets.
Where do we go from here? Frankly, it is time for us to be our own hero. Let’s face
it. There is no Iron Man in our world, so we have to be able to stay awake and save
ourselves. Our great past social justice leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther
King, Jr. left us with the words and tools to continue to carry on the dream and all
we need to do is grab it, read it, and put it into action. We can’t keep walking
through life with a blind eye and we can’t keep searching for a leader. WE are the
leaders. WE are the ones who can make change happen. Stop waiting for someone
to do it for us and act upon it yourself because if you can’t save yourself, how can
you expect to save someone else?
Before I end this, I just want to remind everyone that things happen for a reason.
Although unfortunately we have lost many souls, there is still hope left for those
who don’t even expect it. Be tolerant of each other, be kind, show compassion, mercy
and empathy. Take a moment each day to not think about yourself but to think
about someone else and how you can make their life worth living. Simply saying
hello to someone you wouldn’t normally talk to would go a thousand miles in
someone’s life. You never know who that someone might be. They could be the next
superhero.
