September 3, 2017 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Views From The Pews 2 Did You Know? Anonymous writes, “I came in from out of town to attend Sister Angela’s Jubilee Mass. It was superb. All of it was superb. You people did a terrific job across the board. The best part was the music. The piano player and singer was outstanding. Thank you for being so hospitable and, oh yes, I like the priest’s homily. His stories were very nice. They not only held my attention, they did a good job of making his point.” “Our 5 o’clock Mass last Saturday honored Sister Angela Ashbey on the 50th anniversary of her being a nun. Sister picked out the hymns for the Mass and our Music Director, Clark Knighten, not only did a terrific job on the piano, his vocals were superb. My homily was focused on the Gospel passage, not on Sister’s Jubilee. So, I am particularly grateful that our guest enjoyed the stories I told in my homily.” Dale laughingly says, “Father Mike, you’re a thief. That story you told in your homily on the Pearly Gates came from an old, old Twilight Zone episode.” “I knew I had heard it before; and like most stories I steal, I embellished it quite a bit. But, I had no idea it came from the ‘Twilight Zone’. I guess that supports conventional wisdom. As we get older, we lose short term memory but out long term memory stays intact. I bet it has been more than 40-years since I saw a ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.” Father Mike Parents play an important part in a son’s or daughter’s decision to become a priest or a nun. In a national survey, 73% of people who entered seminary or convent said their parent’s example was an important part of their decision.
