October 29, 2017 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Views From The Pews 2 Did You Know? Anonymous writes, “I am an old lady and my hearing isn’t too good. I couldn’t hear most of what the sister said at Mass. I know it had something to do with taking care of old people, but she spoke too soft. I didn’t understand. Can you explain? “Yes! Sister Paula was talking about Notre Dame Hospice, a ministry of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Hospice care is designed to give people in the final stage of life comfort and quality of life when a cure seems remote or out of the question. The goal of Hospice is to help our loved ones be as comfortable and as free of pain as humanly possible. The goal is to keep our loved ones from having to endure the indignity of dying with tubes down their throats in a hospital bed rather than in their own bed. Hospice nurses help families provide for a patient’s emotional, social, and spiritual needs as well as treating their physical needs. Hospice provides drugs to control pain and, when appropriate, physical, occupational and speech therapy. Medical supplies and equipment, social services, counseling and bereavement services are also available. Hospice services may include doctors, nurses and clergy. Sister Paula was asking for volunteers to sit with such patients for an hour or two occasionally to provide a break for family caretakers. If you are interested, call Sister Paula at Notre Dame Hospice, 227-3600.” Father Mike Please continue to pray and fast until November 5th, during this 40 Days for Life Campaign. Spiritual Adoption Program Thanks to all of you who have participated in the Spiritual Adoption Program. If you have not already done so, please return your baby bottle. The Pew Research Center says there currently are ten countries in the world that are hostile to all religions. They are: China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The last six of those countries are former Soviet republics. Safe Environment Training at VOL Visitation of Our Lady Parish will begin offering Safe Environment Training on the 2nd Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. in the Church. The first class will be held on November 11th. There is no fee to attend. The Safe Environment process is used across the Archdiocese of New Orleans as a means of protecting individuals of all ages from abuse of any kind. All employees and volunteers with ongoing contact with minors need to complete all parts of the Safe Environment process. The Safe Environment class and background check must be renewed every three years. Please check out our website at vol.org for more information. Book of the Dead During the month of November we will remember our deceased in a special way. A Book of the Dead will be accessi- ble in the vestibule for parishioners to write the names of beloved deceased relatives for whom they would like us to pray. The book will be brought up during the offertory procession and placed on a small table in front of the altar for the duration of Mass. After Mass, it will be returned to the podium in the vestibule for continued use.
